Interior design in Shillong, built rather than subcontracted
Kalky Interior has designed and built homes since 2002, and our Shillong studio brings that same work to Meghalaya: drawn here, manufactured in our own factory, and fitted by our own team rather than handed to a contractor.
Shillong is a harder place to build joinery than the plains, and most of the difference comes down to water. Months of heavy rain and air that stays damp will find every unsealed edge in a wardrobe. Specify for the coast and it looks fine for a season, then the doors stop closing properly. So the specification changes here before the first drawing is made, not after the first complaint.
You can walk into the studio on Keating Road, open the drawers, and handle the board, the hinges and the laminate yourself. It is a quicker way to judge an interior company in Shillong than any brochure or rendering.

A studio on Keating Road
Our Shillong studio is at RPG Complex, Keating Road, Secretariat Hills. Everything we build is on display: carcass board cut so you can see the core, edge banding, soft-close hinges and runners, laminate and veneer samples under real light. Open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 8pm, and you do not need an appointment.
If you would rather we came to you, we will visit the property, measure it and talk through what is possible before you commit to anything. There is no charge for that.
Designing for Shillong’s rain and cold
Shillong is not Bhubaneswar, and a scheme that works on the coastal plain does not simply transfer to the hills. Long wet months and high humidity are hard on joinery, so the material choice matters more here: moisture-resistant carcass board, edges sealed on all four sides, and hardware that will not corrode in damp air.
The light is different too. Shillong is overcast for much of the year and the winters are genuinely cold, which changes both how a room should be lit and how warm the finishes need to run. Dark laminate and cool white lighting that look sharp in a Bhubaneswar flat can leave a Shillong living room feeling grey by four in the afternoon.
Older Assam-type houses bring their own constraints: timber frames, sloping ceilings, walls that are rarely square. We measure rather than assume, because a modular run ordered off a nominal dimension will not fit a house that has moved over sixty years.
What we design in Shillong
The full range, the same as Bhubaneswar. Most of our work is as home interior designers in Shillong, complete flats and houses, but we take single rooms as readily as whole properties, and we work as residential interior designers in Shillong for new builds and older houses alike.
- Complete home interiors: living, dining, bedrooms and kitchen as one scheme
- Modular kitchens, planned around how you actually cook
- Wardrobes, TV units, crockery units and storage built to the room
- False ceilings, lighting design, wall panelling and textures
- Commercial interiors: offices, retail, showrooms and hospitality
- Renovation of existing homes, including older Assam-type houses
Modular kitchens in Shillong
A modular kitchen in Shillong has to survive conditions a coastal kitchen never sees. Damp does the most damage here, so it is where the specification is strictest. Moisture-resistant board throughout the carcass, sealed edges, stainless or coated fittings, and a plinth detail that keeps the base cabinets off a floor that will get wet.
Layout comes before finishes. We plan the run between hob, sink and fridge around the way you cook, then fit the storage around that, the things you reach for daily within reach, the things you use twice a year out of the prime space. You see the whole kitchen in 3D, under your own lighting conditions, before a single panel is cut.
How a Shillong project runs
The same five steps as every Kalky project, so there are no surprises about who is doing what.
- Visit or call, we come to the property, measure it and understand how you live in it
- 3D design and an itemised quote, every cabinet and fitting listed with its own price
- You approve, change or remove anything, and only then does the order go in
- Manufacture in our own factory to the specification agreed, not to whatever is in stock
- Installation and handover by our own fitting team, with the warranty documented
Why homeowners here choose us
If you are comparing the best interior designers in Shillong, one question sorts them quickly: who actually builds the furniture? Most interior designers in Shillong subcontract the carpentry. That is where dates slip and where the finish changes from one room to the next, because a different crew built each part. We manufacture, so a delay or a defect belongs to us and there is nobody to point at.
That is also what stands behind the promises: a free 3D design of your own rooms, a fully itemised quote instead of a lump sum, a fixed handover date, and a ten-year warranty on all woodwork. Those are commitments a firm can only make when it controls the work.
What it costs
We quote per project after measuring, because a flat rate for a hill site with restricted access and an apartment on a main road is a rate that is wrong for both.
The quote is itemised line by line: every cabinet, every metre of hardware, every sheet of laminate priced separately, so you can see exactly what you are paying for and take out anything you do not want. A lump sum is easier to produce and much harder to hold anyone to afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Kalky Interior studio in Shillong?
RPG Complex, Keating Road, Secretariat Hills, Shillong, Meghalaya 793001. Open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 8pm. You can walk in without an appointment.
Do you take projects outside Shillong city?
Yes, we work across Meghalaya from the Shillong studio. Tell us where the property is and we will confirm timelines before you commit to anything, because access affects how long installation takes.
Is the work made locally or shipped from Odisha?
Joinery is manufactured in our own factory to the same specification as every Kalky project, which is what keeps quality and the ten-year woodwork warranty consistent across both studios. Installation is handled by our own fitting team.
Does the humidity in Shillong affect modular furniture?
It does, which is why the specification changes here. We use moisture-resistant boards with edges sealed on all four sides and corrosion-resistant hardware, rather than the standard coastal specification.
How long does a home interior take in Shillong?
Manufacturing runs to the same schedule as Bhubaneswar. Installation depends on the site: access, how much can be carried up in one trip, and the weather during the wet months. We give you a date after the site visit rather than a general figure before it.
Can you work on an older Assam-type house?
Yes, and a good part of our Shillong work is exactly that. People often look for a house designer in Shillong when an old family home needs bringing up to date without losing its character. Timber-framed houses need measuring rather than assuming, walls are rarely square and ceilings often slope, so units are made to the dimensions we take on site.
What does a home interior cost in Shillong?
We quote after measuring the property. The quote is itemised, so every cabinet and fitting carries its own price and you can remove anything you do not want. Call the Shillong studio on +91 98636 03406 for a free consultation.
Do you design offices and shops as well as homes?
Yes. Alongside residential work we take offices, retail units, showrooms and hospitality interiors in Shillong, with the same in-house manufacturing and the same warranty on the woodwork.
